 In the last century our impact on earth has increased as never before. We are now in a position to cause cataclysmic damage. Most companies and governments in this modern globalized world strive for economic growth, and in the process exploit the environment for economic profit.
The environmental macrosystem, of which our global economy is a small part of, remains unchanged, while the economy continually expands. This expansion causes major environmental destruction.
When we damage the environment like this, we are in essence sawing off the branch we are sitting on. We destroy ourselves. If we talk about saving our planet, we haven't realized that the planet probably will survive us. We are the ones who probably won't survive or who will damage the earth so severely that it will no longer be suitable for living.
However, exploitation of resources or pollution are not the main reasons for destruction of our basic living conditions. They are merely symptoms, pointing on an underlying cause. Destruction has its origin in our way of thinking, which is ingrained in our culture.
In the 21st century, repairing the damage caused by our industrialized society becomes of foremost importance to our society and to future generations. Our success depends on our ability to carry out a change of consciousness and to take appropriate action. This could possibly conserve our unique planet for future generations.
